Austria Surges Forward

Austria align School Sport concept with FIS SnowKidz
The Schools Sport Action is a nationwide action developed by the Tyroler, Oberösterreicher and Voralberger Boards of Education in conjunction with the Austrian Ski Federation (OESV) and Austrian Seilbahnen (cableways association).

The project has one goal, to give Austrian school children a chance to enjoy snow sports. To achieve this vision each of 138 ski resorts across Tyrol, Oberösterreich and Voralberg offer school children either free half day lift passes or lift passes for 5 Euros. The Austrian Ski Association can provide qualified instructors upon request. The combination of discounted lift passes and instructors allow schools to organize day trips to the snow. To qualify for the offer;

- Children must attend a school in either Tyrol, Oberösterreich or Voralberg
- Schools must stage their snow excursion between Monday – Friday
- Schools must arrange transport to and from the mountain
- There is a maximum of three passes per child per school

OESV Head of Youth Sport Tomas Woldrich commented ‘Bringing children to the snow is the key to success in establishing a sustainable effect on the practice of snow sports. The excellent cooperation with school boards allows us to do so on a national scale, creating a perfect win-win situation: School system benefits from the social effects of these outdoor activities, snow sports are promoted nationwide and – most important of all – the kids have fun. I therefore consider the Austrian School Sport Action an excellent initiative to spread the enthusiasm for snow sports on a long term. Our goal is that every Austrian student attends a school’s winter sports day or week. We are not yet there, but we are steadily getting closer.”
