Japan Sees Continued Growth

Skier Numbers increase in Japan
Japan has seen further growth in the numbers of skiers visiting its resorts, which has been at record-breaking levels of over 10 million a year for five years straight.

The number seems set to be increased again in 2017 thanks to ski season business. In April alone, the tally rose 23.9 percent compared with the previous year to a new record of 2,578,900, shattering the previous all-time single-month high set in July 2016.

The 10 million visitor mark has already been ;passed this year, in mid-May; late year the tally wasn’t reached until June.

Australians are particularly keen on skiing in Japan, partly due to its geographical proximity compared to Europe and North America.
Aussie travel magazine recently found Japan ranked as the most popular ski destination for Australians, overtaking New Zealand for the first time. Canada was placed third, the US fourth and Switzerland fifth.

During a visit to Sydney in January, Japan’s Prime Minister invited his Australian counterpart to go skiing with him in Niseko.
