The Outdoor Classroom

Voss engages school kids
When the Bring Children to the Snow campaign began in 2007 for the participation of schools was a key target in order to bring children to the snow. Whilst each province, state or county within any given country has a different school system, it is only now after the 2nd edition of World Snow Day and a 6th year of the FIS SnowKidz programme that best practices for engaging schools are coming to fruition. For the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships in Voss, the Norwegian Ski Association has worked with local schools and created an large programme to involve and maintain engagement in snow sports.

The programme is operational during the week for local schools and then during the weekend creating a family fun day for when the children are spending time with their families. Moreover Voss have targeted their efforts at local schools in the area to reduce the distance families have to travel.

As Voss-Myrkdalen plays host to the title event, naturally the majority of activities will circle around the atmosphere of the championships. At the base of the central venue for the championships – Myrkdalen – a SnowKidz Freestyle area will be established. Children will have the chance to experience various aspects of Freestyle Skiing from basic jumps to slopestyle rails. To keep active children’s minds entertained the NSF has also brought in their successful Cross-Country programme to provide variety to the already exciting Freestyle Skiing activities planned.

Organisers are expecting around 500 school children each day of the Championships with more expected on the weekend. For more information visit www.voss2013.no
